Navigating the Journey of Medical Termination of Pregnancy: A Personal Account
A personal account of navigating the emotional and logistical challenges of a Medical Termination of Pregnancy, including support systems and personal reflections.

If you are reading this article, you may be facing a pregnancy that is not unfolding as you had envisioned. If you have recently learned that you will need to undergo a Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), I want to virtually embrace you and assure you, from the depths of my heart, that you are not alone in this challenging experience.
The Diagnosis and Announcement: Confronting the Unthinkable
Having personally gone through a Medical Termination of Pregnancy in February 2023, I vividly recall that profoundly unsettling time. When I was informed that my pregnancy would come to an end at the close of my seventh month, I found myself grappling with how I would endure this ordeal, both physically and emotionally.
I spent countless hours online, desperately searching for stories from women and couples who had faced similar situations. I felt an intense need to connect with others, to feel less isolated, and to seek glimmers of hope from those who had navigated this path and emerged on the other side. Whatever your needs may be today, I sincerely hope that through my account, you find a measure of comfort and a flicker of hope for what lies ahead.
I Had This Deep Need to Feel Less Alone
The Waiting Period Between Medical Exams
The most challenging aspect for me was the agonizing wait between medical appointments. This journey stretched over two long months, from the fifth to the seventh month of my pregnancy, leading to the decision to terminate. After the results of the amniocentesis revealed a genetic anomaly in my baby, I faced an additional two-week wait before the MTP. It felt unbearable to continue feeling my baby’s movements daily, knowing that everything would soon come to a halt. I pleaded with my doctor, my voice trembling, to expedite the process. It was an emotional torment.
In hindsight, I understand why doctors allow this precious time between the announcement and the procedure. At the moment of the announcement, I was in such a state of shock and denial that I could not even fathom what was about to happen. My only escape was the desire to end it all immediately—I didn’t want to feel my baby any longer, didn’t want to carry this pregnancy for another day; I wanted it all to disappear.
Medical and Psychological Support During an MTP
The Essential Role of the Multidisciplinary Team
We are fortunate in France to have access to extraordinary medical teams. During the waiting period after the announcement, my partner and I received invaluable support. A social worker and a psychologist not only assisted us with the overwhelming administrative tasks we were too drained to handle, but they also guided us through our emotional journey.
Psychological Follow-Up: A Valuable Protocol Before the MTP
These professionals gently guided us in making decisions we never imagined we would have to make. Although painful, this reflection time allowed us to gradually accept the unacceptable. By the time of the procedure, I felt more prepared to experience those moments and say my goodbyes without being completely overwhelmed by denial or rejection.
How to Navigate the Experience of an MTP
Throughout this ordeal, I discovered several insights that helped me immensely, which I wish to share in hopes they may be beneficial to you. There is no universal way to navigate such a trial; everyone copes in their own manner, and there is no judgment in that.
First and foremost, I learned the critical importance of being my own ally. I vividly recall standing before the mirror, speaking to myself aloud, offering encouragement and reassurance. "You are strong; you can do this." I believe I have never been so compassionate towards myself as I was during this time, and it became my greatest strength.
Open Communication with Your Partner
Additionally, open dialogue with my partner proved invaluable. Taking the time to share our feelings, even the most difficult ones, allowed us to navigate this experience together—each at our own pace but united. You may not experience the same emotions as your partner at the same time; each grieving process is unique, so it’s crucial to articulate what you are going through and what you need in the moment to better understand and support one another.
Managing Relationships with Your Circle
There is another aspect I have yet to discuss, but it was essential in my journey: managing external solicitations. Such news typically shakes up your entire circle, whether close or distant. Messages of support and compassion pour in, which is very kind. Sometimes, reading them brought me comfort; other times, it served as a stark reminder of my critical situation. Often, I lacked the energy to respond to these messages. I made an important decision: I did not force myself to reply. If you are supporting someone going through a similar ordeal, I encourage you to share your support and thoughts without expecting an immediate response. Allow the person to reach out when they are ready.
My partner and my mother took on the task of updating those who inquired or when I was unable to answer the phone. And you know what? That was perfectly okay. If there’s a time when you are forgiven for everything, it’s during this period. If you need to stay in your bubble and limit your circle, don’t feel guilty about it. I was able to reconnect and thank others for their kindness later, when I had a bit more mental space to do so.
The Day of the MTP: Preparing and Saying Goodbye
What helped me the most personally was learning to listen to myself without (self) judgment, especially regarding how I wanted to experience the day of the procedure. There are so many delicate decisions to make for those final moments with your baby—very personal choices that will influence your grieving process. Take the time to reflect on what you need for these goodbyes. Do not let yourself be guided by what you think you should do, but rather by what your heart tells you. Everyone experiences this ordeal differently—the grieving process is profoundly personal. Trust your choices and listen to your heart.
I hope that my account of the MTP has provided you with some support during this challenging time. I wish for you, from the bottom of my heart, that smiles and happiness return when the time is right for you, just as they have for me.
