Navigating Motherhood During Quarantine
As quarantine reshapes family life, many parents reflect on their children's resilience and the challenges of maintaining connections during this unprecedented time.

As we continue to adapt to the challenges of quarantine, many parents find themselves reflecting on the profound changes in their lives and family dynamics. It’s been weeks since we entered this new reality, and the memories of life before seem to fade, much like the face of a loved one lost. In these extended days, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a coherent train of thought, leaving many of us feeling mentally disoriented.
One of the most pressing thoughts on my mind is the impact of this situation on our children. Watching them confined at home for over four weeks, I am both amazed and concerned about how they are coping.
If I had been in their shoes at 13 and 15 years old, I wonder how I would have fared. Despite the initial adjustment period, I now see our kids adapting to their new normal, even if it means grappling with technology they are not fully comfortable with—managing multiple online platforms, struggling with half-functional headphones, and dealing with a printer that seems to run out of ink at the worst possible moments. They are developing a sense of awareness that belies the stereotypes often associated with Generation Z.
In many ways, I believe they are enjoying this time with their families, cherishing the presence of siblings and the comfort of having a home. They had plans—end-of-year exams, sports competitions, and perhaps their first study abroad experiences. Now, those plans have been put on hold, and I find myself engaging them in conversations about their feelings, hopes, and fears, hoping that the inevitable boredom they experience might lead to something creative in the long run.
I also think about the children who may not be thriving in their home environments, where tensions could be high, and communication falters. To their parents, I want to extend my understanding. It’s crucial to do everything possible to avoid exacerbating an already challenging situation, one that feels completely at odds with the vibrant energy of youth. For those with children under ten, remember that this time is precious. Soon enough, they will be seeking independence. Now is not the time for conflicts; it’s a moment to prioritize harmony and connection.
The Future Ahead
As we look toward the future, questions arise about how we will return to normalcy. What will happen to our hectic routines that have dictated our lives for so long? There’s a lingering fear that this slowdown might render us less capable of engaging fully with the outside world. Will we carry scars from this experience, much like physical marks that never fade?
This unexpected pause is forcing us to declutter our lives—reassessing what truly matters and recalibrating our priorities. It’s not just about identifying priorities; it’s about adjusting the weights that we carry in our daily lives.
Love and Connection
These reflections intertwine with my thoughts on love and relationships during this time. Many couples are navigating the challenges of being physically apart, yearning for connection yet unable to provide the daily support they wish to offer. I think of new relationships that struggle to flourish under these circumstances, as well as the elderly parents who, though sometimes just a few kilometers away, feel worlds apart.
Video calls have become a lifeline for many families, yet I worry about the potential loss of our grandparents. The thought terrifies me.
Then there’s my partner, who often asks, “What do you want to do when this is all over?” I find myself at a loss for words. He has been a tremendous help during this time, taking on various roles—repairing, cooking, and even sewing. He possesses a rare gift for nurturing and caring, often bringing a smile even in the most challenging moments. His patience is extraordinary, especially considering my own struggles with asking for help.
I never imagined such a man existed, someone so deeply caring. He deserves recognition for all he does, and as I think about our future, I realize that I could choose any word to express my gratitude, yet the most profound wish I can offer is simply to wish him well.
On this special day for us, despite the distance, I want to express my thanks. If anyone had asked me how I envisioned my ideal partner, I wouldn’t have known how to answer. Now, I understand.
