Decluttering Despite Limited Time

I have set a clear goal: I want to finally declutter properly and maintain order without feeling overwhelmed by daily chaos. That's why I've started to part with unnecessary items and share the project of decluttering my home step by step on my Instagram account @i_need_sunshine and here on the blog.

During my 30-day decluttering challenge, I noticed that I often lack the time in my daily routine to dedicate myself properly to decluttering. It can be exhausting and often takes time. I have to make many decisions, and sorting out often creates more chaos than before.

11 Things You Can Declutter Immediately Without Overthinking!

Since I had to declutter daily during my challenge, I looked for items I could part with immediately without much thought. The things I have an emotional attachment to or where the decision is harder, I postponed for later.

1. Old or Expired Cosmetics

If you, like me, enjoy trying out new cosmetic products, then you've probably accumulated quite a bit. I used to buy new items before using up the ones I already had. Unfortunately, these items have an expiration date! Sort out creams, sunscreens, samples, dried-up lipsticks, and so on when they are expired or have changed in smell or consistency.

2. Single Socks and Damaged Tights

Do you sometimes wonder where all the socks go? If they haven't turned up for a while, then it's time to get rid of single socks and damaged tights.

3. Decor You No Longer Like

Do you have decor lying around that you don't even like anymore? And do you get annoyed every time you have to dust it? Then get rid of it! Also, decor that is stored in cabinets and boxes and that you don't take out at least once a year during Christmas or other occasions can be let go.

4. Leftover Cables & Tech Gadgets

Do you still have charging cables from devices you no longer own? Then get rid of them!

5. Old Food That No One Eats

Expired food, damaged packaging, leftovers that no one wants to eat? Then get rid of them! Food that is still good but no one wants to eat can also be given to friends and family.

6. Clothes That Don't Fit or Itch

Part with clothing items that make you feel uncomfortable or that you haven't worn in years.

7. Pens That Don't Write Anymore

Do you have a lot of pens, markers, and highlighters? Take a few minutes to test them all. The pens that no longer work can be thrown away immediately.

8. Expired Medications

Take a moment to check your medicine cabinet. Expired medications should no longer be used. Please never dispose of medications in the toilet or sink. Instead, expired medications belong in the regular trash. Many pharmacies also accept them.

9. Leftover Candle Stubs

Part with mini stubs that you will never light again and scented candles whose scent you don't like.

10. Duplicate Kitchen Utensils

Are there many duplicate items in your kitchen drawer that you don't use regularly? Do you really need three spatulas, four can openers, or two garlic presses? Part with the items you have duplicates of if you don't use each one regularly.

11. Bags, Totes & Packaging

It makes sense to keep a few paper bags, shipping boxes, and old gift bags. But don't make the mistake like we did and collect so many boxes in the attic to have the right size for every potential item I might want to send! This creates chaos, and these items will always come back into the house. So you don't need to collect them in large quantities!

FAQ: Quick Answers for an Organized Home

Why Should I Start with Small Decluttering Tasks?

Quick successes are simply much more motivating. When you start with small, clearly defined areas, you can stick with it more easily and won't overwhelm yourself.

How Long Should I Plan for Daily Decluttering?

Plan 5–10 minutes daily for decluttering. This is often enough to create visible order. Even small steps will lead you to your goal in the long run.

Where to Put the Decluttered Items?

If items are still in good condition, you can donate or sell them. I like to donate decluttered items to social thrift stores. If something is broken, it should go in the trash or be taken to the recycling center.

How Do I Prevent Accumulating So Much Again?

With simple rules like "One in, One out" and regular 5-minute decluttering sessions, unnecessary items won't accumulate as much. It's best to check right before every purchase: Do I really need this? Where would it have its place at home?
