Skin in the Sun: How to Protect Children from the Strong Rays of May

As the heat arrives, the desire for sunshine is great — but children's skin is delicate and needs careful protection.

There always comes that first Saturday in May when we go out in t-shirts, the sun is really warming up, and the kids spend the afternoon at the park. Wonderful. But then in the evening, sometimes, their shoulders are pink. And we wonder: should I have put on sunscreen?

The answer is almost always yes. In May, the sun is already strong enough to cause sunburn, especially during the peak hours — and children's skin is much more sensitive than that of adults.

Why Children's Skin is More Vulnerable

Children's skin is thinner, contains less melanin (the natural protective pigment), and burns more easily. Sunburns in childhood are associated with an increased risk of long-term skin damage. Protecting it is a real act of prevention, not an excess of caution.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen

  • SPF 50 or 50+ for children, always — especially up to 3 years old
  • Physical (mineral) filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide: they are gentler on children's sensitive skin compared to chemical filters
  • Water-resistant: essential if the child plays in water or sweats
  • Children-specific formulation: avoid fragrances and allergens

How to Apply It (Really)

  • Apply 20-30 minutes before sun exposure
  • Don’t forget ears, neck, tops of feet, and lips
  • Reapply every 2 hours and after every bath or intense sweating
  • Use a generous amount: most people use too little

Beyond Sunscreen: Other Protections

  • Hat with a brim: protects face, neck, and ears
  • UV-protective shirt: very useful at the beach or for long exposures
  • Shade: the most effective way to protect is to avoid direct exposure during the hottest hours (11 AM - 4 PM)
  • Sunglasses with UV protection: yes, even for children

And Vitamin D?

As we have already seen, vitamin D synthesis requires sun exposure. The solution is not to skip sunscreen but to ensure a small daily exposure (15-20 minutes on face and arms) during the less risky hours — before 10 AM or after 5 PM — before applying protection for longer sessions.

✅ Children's Sunscreen Protection Checklist

  • Buy a children-specific SPF 50+ sunscreen
  • Apply it 20-30 minutes before any prolonged sun outing
  • Reapply every 2 hours (set a reminder on your phone)
  • Always bring a hat and a spare shirt
  • Avoid direct exposure between 11 AM and 4 PM

Protecting children's skin from the sun is a daily act of care that starts with sunscreen and extends to hats. A healthy habit to build from a young age — because skin remembers everything.

⚠️ If you have doubts about the appropriate sunscreen for your child, especially if they have very sensitive skin or dermatological conditions, consult the pediatrician or dermatologist
