Where Does the Chaos in the Closet Come From?
You might be asking yourself: How can I best tackle the task of decluttering my clothes? You often wear the same pieces and pay little attention to the rest of your clothing because you’ve lost track of what’s in your closet, making it hard to declutter?
Since I struggle to part with things, our home was drowning in chaos. A few months ago, I decided to declutter our entire house. I’m sharing my decluttering project here on my blog and on my Instagram account @i_need_sunshine.
Recently, I finally decluttered my wardrobe and enjoy the organized drawers and the new order in my closet every day. In this post, I’ll share five tips that will help you bring more order to your wardrobe.
Decluttering Clothes Made Easy with These 5 Tips
I find it particularly hard to part with clothing. There’s always that thought that I might need the items again someday. But why is it sometimes so difficult to declutter clothes? Sometimes it’s the idea that you might want to wear a piece someday or that it cost a lot of money. Emotional reasons can also play a role if you associate certain clothing with special memories.
The following tips can help you part with clothes more easily. For me, focusing on my favorite pieces has been particularly helpful in bringing more order to my wardrobe.
Feel free to check out my Instagram Reel with the 5 tips for decluttering your wardrobe:
1) KonMari Method
You’ve probably heard of the KonMari Method by Japanese tidying expert Marie Kondo. It’s about keeping only the clothing that brings you joy. You part with everything that doesn’t evoke positive emotions. In practice, this means you should hold each piece of clothing and tune in to whether it makes you happy. This might sound a bit lofty and spiritual. However, the idea of focusing on my favorite pieces really helped me with decluttering. I completely emptied my closet and only put back my favorite items. This worked quite well for some categories like tops and pants.
2) Three-Month Rule
Let’s be honest: What are the chances you’ll wear a piece of clothing you haven’t worn at least once in the last three months? Excluding seasonal clothing, of course. The three-month rule is a simple and effective method for parting with clothes. If three months feels too short, you can easily extend this rule to six or twelve months. Especially for seasonal items, a longer period makes more sense. This method forces you to look at your wardrobe with a realistic perspective. We often think we might still need the items. But if we never wear them, they just take up space in the closet. And perhaps someone else would appreciate them more.
3) Check the Fit
Do you know the feeling? You love the look of that beautiful, expensive blouse, but it doesn’t fit well and you don’t feel comfortable in it? That great pair of jeans looks good but pinches at the waist and is only worn when your favorite pants are in the wash? I’d say: Get rid of it! Keep only the pieces that fit you well and in which you feel comfortable! It’s very important to me now that clothing is also comfortable. So sort out the clothes that don’t fit properly and are uncomfortable. This not only creates space in your closet but also promotes a positive body image.
4) Declutter by Categories
To gain more clarity in your wardrobe, sort your clothing by categories like tops, pants, dresses, etc., to structure the decluttering process. Is your closet in chaos because you haven’t decluttered properly in a long time and own too many pieces? Don’t know where to start with decluttering? First, get an overview and then declutter by categories. The advantage is that you can immediately see if you have too many items in one category.
5) Consider the Overall Look
When decluttering, it can also be helpful to not only look at each piece of clothing individually but also how the items fit together. The most beautiful pieces won’t do you any good if you can’t really combine them. They’ll just hang unworn in the closet, waiting forever for their moment. However, if you consciously choose pieces that match well, it will be easier for you to decide on an outfit in the morning.
Conclusion: Decluttering for More Clarity in Your Wardrobe
I’m very pleased with the new order in my closet. Before, I had no overview and kept wearing the same things, even though my closet was bursting at the seams. As part of my big project to declutter our entire house, I finally turned my attention to my wardrobe. I knew this would be a bigger project and would take a long time. After initially making slow progress, I began to focus on my favorite pieces, just as Marie Kondo recommends.
To maintain the new order, it’s very important to regularly declutter clothing. Otherwise, your closet will soon look as chaotic as before. After all, decluttering is an ongoing process. New items always come into our home. I’m trying to stick to the rule that for every new piece of clothing, I will declutter an old one.
